Radical Marxist Priest Ernesto Cardenal to Speak at Xavier U: Catholic Students Ask Why

An older Che Guevara?
No. It's Fr. Ernesto Cardenal.

On April 16th, Xavier University in Cincinnati will welcome Father Ernesto Cardenal, a noted Liberation Theologian, Marxist politician and rebel against Papal authority. Father Cardenal will be reading poetry of his own composition, included a poem inspired by Darwin titled “The Origin of Species,” in the campus Bellarmine Chapel.

The presentation is annouced here.

Besides his dissident theological opinions, Father Cardenal also worked closely with the avowedly Marxist and patently anti-Catholic Sandinista revolutionary movement in Nicaragua. His exploits, including the founding of a revolutionary commune, which was later converted into a communist guerilla force,1 garnered the attention of the Sandinista leadership. After the successful revolution, he was appointed to the position of Minister of Culture in the newly-formed Sandinista regime.

The question remains: Why is this man being invited to a Catholic university?  What possible reason could there be?

Both Socialist & Catholic?
Impossible.

According to Xavier University, “his (Father Cardenal’s) involvement with the Sandinista movement in his home country have informed his writing and political activism.” Perhaps this is so, but the question arises: of what have they informed him? Clearly not of sound Catholic doctrine, since he has remained a staunch advocate of Socialism, which, according to Pope Pius XI, can never be reconciled with true Catholicism.2  Furthermore, Liberation Theology, which Fr. Cardenal embraces, has been repeatedly censured both by the Holy See,3 and also by then-Cardinal Ratzinger,4now Pope Benedict XVI.

Why then is this Socialist poet being heralded at a Catholic university? Xavier University would do well to recall the words of Pope Leo XIII: “The harvest of misery is before our eyes, and the dreadful projects of the most disastrous national upheavals are threatening us from the growing power of the socialistic movement.”5  Xavier University must decide between Catholicism or Socialism, for “no one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist.”6

I see no problem with Darwin. He teaches about the origin of our bodies, not our souls, and he himself respected religion. Dissidence in other areas might be a problem, but don't lump them with Darwin.

Why is this man still a priest? He should be excommunicated. Where are our Bishops, etc.? What is wrong with our Catholic schools, Colleges and Universities today? If the Church is giving these institutions money it is time to stop.

I am neither shocked nor surprised any more. Your founder must be rolling over in his grave. The Jesuits have gone over the deep end. I attended Georgetown when the Jesuits still believed in God.

Fr. Ernesto Cardenal and former Fr. General Pedro Arrupe (now deceased) are both revered by many Jesuits. Their recalcitrance and their infamous disobedience both to their great founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, to the Roman Catholic Church and to the pope, has caused their order, the Jesuits, to be bastardized. Not only should they be looked upon with disdain, they, and those who follow their heretical doctrine should be officially denounced. If you need more information, please read "The Jesuits" by Fr. Malachi Martin.

I am a simple woman and do not know much about Socialism, however, I have been in Nicaragua several times and each time I am amazed at the poverty, discrimination against the poor. I believe that we Catholics owe this people help in any way possible, I also believe that by looking the other way and ignoring these problems the poor out of desperation will inevitably turn to Socialism and ultimately to Communism. Because God has given us so much here in US as well as in Europe it is our responsibility to help these impoverished nations, the more we receive the greater our responsibility for the poor.

Editor -- Everyone is in favor of helping the poor. However, Socialism is a lie. In fact, wherever is was/is implemented, it only brings more poverty and misery. The underpinning ideology of Socialism is atheistic Communism, which destroys society to the core.

Totally Satanic. Paul vi warned us about "the smoke of Satan has entered our Catholic Church" (Dic. 1972). The smoke is out, Satan is in. 200 million killed by the anti-God sect of communism of which Cardenal is a defending member.

Remember, "In the end Her Immaculate Heart WILL Triumph" -- FATIMA.

Fr. Ernest Cardenal is badly in need of a true conversion to the Catholic faith. Until that has happened he should not be allowed to speak at any Catholic venue, especially not at Catholic universities, where young men and women can be misled for a lifetime and led to eternal perdition.

Fr. Graham bears a grave responsibility in this case.

Fr. Ernesto Cardnal is badly in need of conversion to the true teachings of the Catholic Church. Fr. Graham bears a grave responsibility for Fr. Cardenal's speaking engagement. Why do our young students have to be misled in so-called Catholic universities and there start on the road to their possible eternal perdition?

I hurt for all the young people being led astray by errors of devil driven "priests" and a university that permits their precocious minds to be filled up with garbage. Catholic Universities are supposed to instruct the truth and strengthening soldiers of Christ.

WHY & HOW does the Vatican still allow him to be a Catholic priest if he Father Ernesto Cardenal is so cleary against the papacy & the teachings of the Church? If the Vatican insists on retaining him as an active priest then why would the university have a problem with him? It reminds me of the painful question why does the Church take so long to act against it's own when they are so manifestly harmful to the very flock they are supposed to protect & guard & guide e.g the harm done to the universal church of active homosexual Priests not to mention those who are living openly or otherwise in permanent fornication with women they claim to be their wives or girlfriends. Must it take a hostile confrontation with courage faithful & others to drag the Church to court & sue for millions or spread the muck in the media before the VATICAN acts to clean up house! We need efficient, effective, permanent 21st century Christian management tools & techniques to deal with these matters/complaints.

I am totally against this. Such teaching by our Catholic priest cannot be accepted . I will pray that our Roman Catholic faith does not go by the teachings of the world. May he be shown the true answer for his words and deeds.

I believe that those with "valid" concern should attend the event and in a spirit of prayer, charity, and clear knowledge of Roman Catholic Church teaching challenge Ernesto Cardenal on the positions he holds as they are introduced in the discussion of his poetry. Yet, I suggest this be done with sincerity of heart in hope of encouraging him to reflect on the err of some of his views. If he chooses to stand by "his" theology, hope that the questions raised and facts shared will cause others attending to reflect. Now, more than ever, it is important to be able to differentiate between true Catholic church teaching and the neo-secularized catholic teaching that appears to be sweeping our nation.Still, as difficult as it may be at times, we must remember to judge the sin and not the sinner. God deeply loves Ernesto Cardenal.I s his presence at Xavier University confusing and misleading? Absolutely. Still God can bring good even out of this situation.Stand firm in love. Truth will prevail.

@Joyce,
First of all, let us not forget that Darwin taught "natural selection" as the principle of all life. While practically all his disciples nowadays reject the notion of "social" Darwinism, the fact remains that none of them has been able to produce a genuine philosophical reason for doing so. In other words, we have this principle that has (allegedly) governed all life in this world from the earliest protoplasmoid brew, through thousands of increments and finally to man's emergence as a species--how then does it *lose* all its significance as a governing force?
The Darwinists have not attempted to address this point--perhaps because it hasn't been raised?

To #2 J.S.-You've missed the point. This man should not speaking in a Catholic Chapel!!! St. Bellarmine defended Truth. This is just plain cowardice from the University to allow this to happen. Who invited him?

To #3 - A. M.- TOTAL AGREEMENT! Put the money elsewhere!

To #7 - L. V.- Thanks for reminding the short memory of the public!! The image of Pope JPII shaking his finger in righteous anger to this man is an image I have never forgotten. It is not surprising Catholics in the U.S. forget so much. Just think if the Catholic majority re-elects the President in 2012, they're memory can't remember 2 years. He has bankrupt the U.S. & has done more for more baby killing than any predecessor! Those who voted for him have committed a MORTAL SIN by aiding in killing innocent life. Only Catholics can stop Socialism - recall history in the U.S. 150 years ago!!! We must do our homework before voting again!! God bless you, and Lord have Mercy on this man!

Hi, I'm not catholic, I'm not American and probably I will disagree on many things, but I support your fight. Don't let this communist break your country !! as they are doing in Brazil and Latin America!! This false apologist of freedom, tolerance and what ever!! Here they have succeeded in destroying morality, the values, and my country is living a moral decadence and we live in a situation that they say is not a dictatorship, but you can not disagree with the "common sense" reality that they dominate and control by the media with "ideological patrols". Good look!

This guy is an amazing poet and social activist. Obviously the chorus of disapproval by "catholics" on this list points to a lack of acceptance of progressive politics and really speaks towards atrophy of growth in the Catholic church.

Jesus was a revolutionary. And it's time that people who really believe in him start standing up for the poor, hungry, middle class, etc.

I question when people simply throw out the word socialism, marxism, and communism as an arguing point of demonization. It actually gives a very useful analysis of society. This in no way justifies the brutality that has occurred in communist regimes. Free market global capitalism is destroying the planet so in this time of need I think it's useful to have an open mind towards other ways of thinking.
