On January 17, Santa Clara University will welcome Amy Tan, a novelist who has made no secret of her support for abortion “rights,” as well as the unfettered use of contraceptives. Ms. Tan has used her novels as a means to promulgate erroneous opinions, with abortion featuring prominently in one of her books, The Joy Luck Club.

Additionally, Ms. Tan has not shied away from announcing her anti-Catholic position. In a public Facebook post sprinkled with obscenities, she harangued pro-life politicians, accusing them of “wanting to pervert the lives of women.”  (Warning: foul language)

However, Santa Clara University -- a Catholic institution -- has invited Amy Tan for a lecture and book signing on campus.  "Tan’s work speaks to millions," claims a university statement, "with its universal themes of family relationships, generational change, and personal history.” It is unclear how abortion and misguided feminist theories could possibly qualify as a legitimate "family relationship."

Amy Tan

In light of the author’s avowed opposition to Church teaching, combined with her attack on the right to life, is she the type of role model the university wants to present to its students?  Should abortion advocates like Ms. Tan be given a platform on any Catholic campus?

On this issue, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is clear:  "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Santa Clara University's decision to feature an outspoken opponent of Church teaching in its Presidential Speaker Series throws a dark shadow over its Catholic identity.  Ironically, the theme of the 2012-2013 speaker series is "Enlivening the Whole Person: Head, Heart and Body."

"Abortion destroys the whole person," said TFP Student Action Director John Ritchie.

"Abortion deliberately destroy heads, hearts and bodies.  It destroys God's plan for children.  It shatters motherhood, fatherhood, and families.  That's why I'm hoping that Santa Clara University will reconsider its invitation to pro-abortion supporter Amy Tan and replace her with a better speaker, a true role model, someone Catholic students can look up to and imitate, someone who respects the right to life," he said.  "I can't fathom why a Catholic university would give Amy Tan a platform."

According to its web site, Santa Clara University is "committed to faith-inspired values and educating leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion who will help fashion a more just, humane, and sustainable world."  Surely, in pursuance of those “faith-inspired values,” the University ought to maintain an environment in which Church teaching is respected, upheld and defended.

Join the protest

In the spirit of charity, for the sake of the Santa Clara's Catholic identity, and for the unborn, please join TFP Student Action in calling for the cancellation of Amy Tan's scheduled appearance on January 17.

Why am I not surprised this is happening at a Jesuit run institution. St. Ignatius must be hiding his face in heaven! Please cancel Ms. Tan's appearance on Santa Clara University's campus.

Astounding that a Jesuit University is giving a platform too an individual who is the complete antithesis of Catholic church teaching. Anyone's curses hasn't anything useful to say on Facebook.

Please rethink having Amy Tan appear at your University. It is the responsibility of those in authority to guide those under their protection to free choice but that choice is based on integrity, honesty, faith. Therefore, that choice has to be constructive.

Father Engh,

It is unfathomable to me that a Catholic University should sponsor a lecture, and subsequent books signing, by a novelist who flaunts one of the basic teaches of our faith. I beg you to reconsider your invitation to Ms Tan.

Prayerfully,

Ron

Please rethink having Amy Tan speak to your students. You are in authority, therefore it is your faith, integrity, honor that will be in question. Those under your authority need your support and guidance in receiving information that will benefit them in their lives.

I am appalled that a Catholic University would invite a Pro-Abortion advocate to speak at their University. I urge you to withdraw your invitation to Ms. Tan.

Please cancel Ms. tan's upcoming appearance at your University. It is a scandal to allow her at your school.

The time is now to stand up everywhere and all the time against the murder of the unborn.

If Mr. & Mrs. Tan, the parents of Amy Tan were strong abortion advocates as Amy, she would not be here!!!

As a graduate of St. Louis U in 1950 I am appalled to see how our Jesuit Universities are becoming anti-Catholic tools to influence our young people to ignore the teachings of the Catholic church. Please cancel the appearance of Amy Tan.

I am so sad that Catholic Universities don't think that they should go by Catholic morals. Take Catholic off your University's name or never invite speakers who are directly against what our Church stands for.

Please cancel Ms Tan's lecture and book signing on campus, because she favors killing children by abortion. This kind of thinking should not be promoted by a Catholic University.

Sir or Mrs. or Ms.

Please reconsider your decision to invite Ms. Mrs. or Mr. Tan to speak at your school. Has Bill O'Reilly (a strong Catholic) ever been invited to speak at your school?
Please excuse any spelling or grammar mistakes as I am relatively new in the wonderful country.

Ricardo

Cancell Amy Tan unless she is going to convert to Catholicism. We don't need more immorality in our universities. There is plenty of it already!

Shame on the members of the board of SCSU who gave her permission to speak. They are like parents encouraging their daughters to have indiscriminate sex anyhow the taxpayers will pay for their morning after pills or their abortion

Please rescind Ms. Tan's invitation. Giving her a platform and a place of honor from which to speak is an insult and a scandal to the university, its students and the Church itself, whom it is the university's mission to support and serve.

I am a Santa Clara alum with 5 other alums in my family. We are all so disappointed in SCU for giving Amy Tan a platform at our school to spread her pro-abortion and anti-Catholic views. SURELY YOU CAN DO BETTER!

I find Ms. Tan's book, anti-Catholic views, discriminatory and inflammatory insults to Catholicism, and pro-abortion stance very offensive. There are many other acclaimed authors available who promote family values and who would be a much better example to our impressionable young adults attending your college. What kind of example and message are you giving your students?

A Catholic institution should never be a platform for those who despise our values. Please invite an author who has earned the respect of Catholics, and those who respect life, and are more supportive and tolerant of our faith community and values.

I have read you were a tough grader and expected the very best from you students. I would hope then you would reconsider allowing a pro abortionist spew her venom on the students in your care looking for a Catholic education, with all our Church's fundamental beliefs. If this is YOUR BEST you get a failing grade! Life is sacred, it begins at conception and for any woman to destroy the life growing in her womb is breaking the 5th commandment. Pretty simple but that is what abortion is, killing another human being. A HUMAN BEING made in the image and likeness of God is seen by you, and so many others in authority in our Catholic schools,as a CHOICE a woman has the RIGHT to make. How wrong, and to try to make it right is wrong, add a sin as well. I'm embarrassed to call myself a Roman Catholic when you act so willfully, abusing your authority to sanction such a contradiction of Catholic beliefs. Shame on you, and I feel your mother would be ashamed of you as well. Print all or none!

Killing innocent unborn babies is against the Commandment of God. It is a barbaric and an uncivilized act. Consenting or allowing anyone to openly advocate abortion is no different from advocating murder.

Please cancel Ms. Tan's appearance and speaking engagement at your University. It is beyond understanding that you could imagine this a reasonable choice. A catholic institution, such as Santa Clara, should not promote values contradictory to the church, as you are doing, by inviting an influential speaker to give her views knowingly opposing church teaching. There is a better choice for an author/speaker. Please reconsider this grave decision you have made and cancel the event.

Abortion is a choice that can never be tolerated by any faithful Catholic, and should NOT be allowed on a Catholic campus. This is why I would not send my children to this "Catholic" college, even though we live close by. I would rather send them to a state university, where evil is promoted and tolerated, yes, but is also expected, so it is far less scandalous and insidious to their precious Catholic faith.

A Catholic institution is meant to educate people and ultimately SAVE SOULS! Having a pro-abortion Catholic basher is going to have the opposite effect! Please do not promote things that are against God's will! You will be in our prayers and may God send His Spirit to guide the leaders and educators of this institution!

This is a time when all Catholics and Catholic Institutions in particular need to step up and affirm our beliefs, and not allow those who take anti-Catholic stances a forum at our expense. Such 'tolerance' for those speakers is unworthy of a Catholic institution

I am a registered nurse and abortion is not a medical problem. It is a child who has a BEATING HEART BEFORE a woman even misses her period. To abort makes you exactly like a Nazi of the Holocaust. God commands us not to murder and this is a mortal sin that is a one way ticket to eternal flames.
