Pueri Concinite: A Sublime Christmas Carol

By TFP Student Action

Share this Christmas carol... Post it. Email it. Facebook it.

This marvelous Christmas carol was composed by Austrian musician Johann Von Herbeck (1831-1877).  The live performance features Les Choristes in the Palais des Congrès de Paris with soloist Jean Baptiste Maunier.  Doesn’t the style and calm cadence of this melody capture something of the Catholic Medieval spirit?   What do you think?

Lyrics in Latin

Pueri concinite, nato regi psallite!
Voce pia dicite: "apparuit quem genuit Maria!"
Sunt impleta quem predixit Gabriel.
Eja ! Eja ! Virgo Deum genuit quem divina voluit clementia.
Hodie apparuit apparuit in Israel.
Ex Maria virgine natus est Rex.
Alleluia!

English Translation

Sing, children! Sing with the harp in a gentle voice of the King’s Birth.
He has appeared who was born of Mary.
All those things foretold by Gabriel and now fulfilled.
Rejoice! Rejoice! The maiden has borne God, who wills us His divine mercy.
He appears this day in Israel, born of the Virgin Mary; the King is born.
Alleluia!

Very nice. In one Catholic school, we could always visit the chapel before going on the playground, if we chose to do so.

There's nothing so sublime or inspiring as the pure voices of children. The anointing of God is all over this music. Thank you for making it available this Christmas Season. God Bless.

I pray twice a month at Mary-statue downtown and hang sign "Whether glad, sad or wary, stay a while, say a Hail Mary". Over the years, 7 pedestrians came to the statue and prayed. More came to touch the statue.

Wonderful! Fabulous! Very Catholic! I so miss Latin, the official language of the Church; instead we are forced to sing Christmas Masses in a truly foreign language for our country, Spanish, just because illegals are taking over our country. It ruins Christmas for me every year.

The Church in it's infinite wisdom uses Latin as the universal language. I can understand that we all want to be inclusive with native brethren, but Latin would fill the bill for all. May this beautiful Christmas carol fill all of my Christian brothers and sisters with hope and love on our Lord's birthday and throughout the coming year.

Melanie: I agree with your sentiments, especially about the use of Latin. I had attempted to acknowledge your post positively, but I hit the wrong one, the Thumbs Down sign. Yes, this young man has a true gift from GOD, which he shared with all of us. Merry Christmas.

It is regrettable that "Medieval" is not widely recognized as a generic term for authentic Catholicism. It is therefore commendable that one should seek "Medieval" in all it's treasure and spiritual richness. Well done.

How uplifting! For Melanie, I am sorry for you. We are blessed to have priests from the FSSP who say all of our Masses in pre-Vatican 2 Latin. I feel so lucky to have them. I would urge people to seek them for a true return to the holy.

And nothing beats a good boys' choir!

Actually the piece captures the tradition of 'Pastoral' pieces of the Renaissance and Baroque periods rather than the Medieval carols. Probably the instrumental pastoral pieces by Archangelo Corelli are the most familiar.
