Impurity is plastered everywhere today: Movies, TV, billboards, music, entertainment, books, and magazines.

We must fight back.

To that end the following collection of quotes -- many of which are authored by Doctors of the Church -- will provide you with the support and encouragement you need to stand your ground and fight for purity.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."
-- Matthew 5:8

 Saint John Bosco

“Holy Purity, the queen of virtues, the angelic virtue, is a jewel so precious that those who possess it become like the angels of God in heaven, even though clothed in mortal flesh.”
-- Saint John Bosco

“We must be pure. I do not speak merely of the purity of the senses. We must observe great purity in our will, in our intentions, in all our actions.”
-- Saint Peter Julian Eymard

“Those whose hearts are pure are the temples of the Holy Spirit.”
-- Saint Lucy

“We must practice modesty, not only in our looks, but also in our whole deportment, and particularly in our dress, our walk, our conversation, and all similar actions.”
-- Saint Alphonsus Liguori

“In the realm of evil thoughts none induces to sin as much as do thoughts that concern the pleasure of the flesh.”
-- Saint Thomas Aquinas

"In temptations against chastity, the spiritual masters advise us, not so much to contend with the bad thought, as to turn the mind to some spiritual, or, at least, indifferent object. It is useful to combat other bad thoughts face to face, but not thoughts of impurity.”
-- Saint Alphonsus Liguori

“Lust indulged became habit, and habit unresisted became necessity.”
-- Saint Augustine

“More souls go to hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”
-- Our Lady of Fatima

"Filthy talk makes us feel comfortable with filthy action. But the one who knows how to control the tongue is prepared to resist the attacks of lust."
-- Saint Clement of Alexandria

“The man of impure speech is a person whose lips are but an opening and a supply pipe which hell uses to vomit its impurities upon the earth.”
-- Saint John Vianney

"Either we must speak as we dress, or dress as we speak. Why do we profess one thing and display another? The tongue talks of chastity, but the whole body reveals impurity."
-- Saint Jerome

“A pure soul is like a fine pearl. As long as it is hidden in the shell, at the bottom of the sea, no one thinks of admiring it. But if you bring it into the sunshine, this pearl will shine and attract all eyes. Thus the pure soul, which is hidden from the eyes of the world, will one day shine before the Angels in the sunshine of eternity.”
-- Saint John Vianney

“The pure soul is a beautiful rose, and the Three Divine Persons descend from Heaven to inhale its fragrance.”
-- Saint John Vianney

“Chastity is the lily of virtues, and makes men almost equal to Angels. Everything is beautiful in accordance with its purity. Now the purity of man is chastity, which is called honesty, and the observance of it, honor and also integrity; and its contrary is called corruption; in short, it has this peculiar excellence above the other virtues, that it preserves both soul and body fair and unspotted.”
-- Saint Francis de Sales

“Humility is the safeguard of chastity. In the matter of purity, there is no greater danger than not fearing the danger. For my part, when I find a man secure of himself and without fear, I give him up for lost.  I am less alarmed for one who is tempted and who resists by avoiding the occasions, than for one who is not tempted and is not careful to avoid occasions. When a person puts himself in an occasion, saying, I shall not fall, it is an almost infallible sign that he will fall, and with great injury to his soul.”
-- Saint Philip Neri

“Your good resolutions must not make you proud, but humble and diffident; you carry a large sum of gold about you, take care not to meet any highwaymen. In this life there is nothing certain: we are in a continual warfare, and, therefore, ought to be on our guard day and night. We sail in a tempestuous sea that threatens us on every side, and in a poor leaky vessel: the devil, who aims at nothing less than our destruction, never ceases to increase the storm, to overwhelm us thereby, if he can; hence it was that the Apostle gave this precaution, even to the virtuous: ‘Let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall’ (1 Cor. x.12).”
-- Saint Jerome, Epistle to Saint Eustochium

“The state of grace is nothing other than purity, and it gives heaven to those who clothe themselves in it. Holiness, therefore, is simply the state of grace purified, illuminated, beautified by the most perfect purity, exempt not only from mortal sin but also from the smallest faults; purity will make saints of you! Everything lies in this!”
-- Saint Peter Julian Eymard

“Chastity, or cleanness of heart, holds a glorious and distinguished place among the virtues, because she, alone, enables man to see God; hence Truth itself said, ‘Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.’”
-- Saint Augustine

“There is no remedy so powerful against the heat of concupiscence as the remembrance of our Savior’s Passion. In all my difficulties I never found anything so efficacious as the wounds of Christ: In them I sleep secure; from them I derive new life.”
-- Saint Augustine

“God bestows more consideration on the purity of the intention with which our actions are performed than on the actions themselves.”
-- Saint Augustine

“He alone loves the Creator perfectly who manifests a pure love for his neighbor.”
-- Saint Bede the Venerable

"You carry your snare everywhere and spread your nets in all places. You allege that you never invited others to sin. You did not indeed, by your words, but you have done so by your dress and your deportment.”
-- Saint John Chrysostom

"Let your modesty be a sufficient incitement, yea, an exhortation to everyone to be at peace on their merely looking at you."
-- Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Kathy you are so right, but even more, for all those who struggle with pornography addiction and those in sinful & adulterous marriages. These quotes are prayers to holiness.

Great quotes??? I was really disappointed to see only one of them contained any scripture. It makes them much less applicable to anyone, even Catholics, especially those who are not familiar with the saints

The one quote from our Lord, "Blessed are the pure of heart...", and then the follow-up exhortations from St. Paul and St. Peter etc which clarified what was meant by a pure life, were sufficient to be lived out in the lives of all these Christian heroes, and countless more. These lines they spoke or wrote on purity, then, came from their personal experience in struggling to live it, and from the Holy Spirit's own inspiration in their souls' connectedness to Him.

Every one living in these times included myself because I'm the only one who can change myself should try to practice this.

We would all do well if we practice this. I especially know this from experience and am trying to live with purity of body and mind. This applies to all people on earth.

Ask priests to put quotes in the Sunday bulletin. The flock needs them.

I too find these to be beneficial for all people, I serve as a bishop, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I will use some of these quotes as I counsel with youth and others of our faith. There is much of truth in many places. We must be open to recognizing it no matter the source. Truth is truth. Thank you for putting this together.

These are inspiring quotations from great spiritual leaders. As we observe today the decline in culture of our American society, which includes not only guttural language but as well low-cultured ways of dressing and unacceptable behavior, we can see that what saints such as St. Augustine have spoken about.

The truth shall set you free, yet in our Catholic churches the quotes are not even enacted. Comfort, conformity to the world, lack of humility are rarely if ever even preached in the homily. How do you show light to the world when you let your own house be influenced by darkness?

I sincerely agree with you daun. It's so sad seeing so many priests and bishops degrade our Holy Mother Church these days. Just 'going along', 'The Church of Nice'. as Michael Voris would say. Check out churchmilitant.tv

Excellent perception. I notice only those that believe in where they are and what they USE to do realize that all it not well in Catholic Churches. It's time to give more time to the Eucharistic Adoration Room. Still can be reverent without distractions.

How beautiful and true. Indeed, what we should fear the most is our lack of fear of the toxic milieu of impurity about us. Perhaps this is why so many plunge forward with impunity, not cognizant of the grave danger that any impartial observer with any vision can see is happening to Western civilization. Let us be jewels before God, a pearl whose beauty is revealed only after death.

I started school 9/6/1935. Catholic School. The Sisters that taught us were of the no-nonsense type. One good thing I liked, they made you memorize many prayers. I sure am grateful because all through life I prayed the many prayers they taught us to memorize. Whenever we were tempted we could turn to the prayers. Prayer before a crucifix. St. Michael the Archangel prayer. The Act of Consecration to the Immaculate heart of Mary. and many more. Saint Paul says, pray always. You know why he said to pray always, because the evil one is on the prowl seeking anyone to destroy their immortal soul.

If only parents would use this as a guide for their young children. "More souls go to HELL for sins of the flesh than for any other reason." - Our LADY OF FATIMA.

Our priests should use these quotes in their homilies when speaking of sins against the 6th and 9th commandments..........BUT sad to say, how many ever DO speak about the evils of our day? We should pray for courageous priests for they are sorely needed in our day!!!

I have begun to ask my teenagers when they put up a fuss to help with chores or fuss about playing with their younger siblings or want to wear skirts too short or swimsuits too revealing...."Do you want to be a saint or not???!!!" They usually quiet up and get in line.

Being a senior citizen I have seen the Holy Mass turned into a disrespectful show with women and young girls dressed in cutoff jeans, bare backs and other unsuitable attire. Oh did I mention that they bring up the Host and Blood of our Lord to the altar dress in those clothes. Not a word from our Pastor. I guess numbers are more important than dress.

How true these quotes are. I've always said, do away with the 10 commandments and the result is plain to see.... People act they way they feel because there is no law to fall back on. I agree totally with John about prayer, knowing them and using them when in danger of sin. Agree totally that parents need to teach these to their children and especially Priests need to preach this at the pulpits!! Great topic, keep up the good work.

Even those people who are in the depths of mortal sin can be cleansed and be made pure once more. All one has to do is to change ones life forever with the help Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

All is lost is Spokane, WA as Bishop Cupich said, "we do not concern ourselves with what the Pope or Vatican says, we do as culture dictates." Not much we can do about in now except to pray against it!

Blessed are the pure of hart. How wonderful it would be if Priests shouted this from the Alter and how Wonderful it would be if the priests truly gave young People (us oldies as well) the Sacrament of Reconciliation in real privacy by going back to the old way of confessing. Young people are very embarrassed with confessing so another way must be found so that souls will not be lost.

Yes, it's true that the whole world should read these quotes, but what's an even greater truth is that I should read and obey them. "There but for the Grace of God go I"...or, perhaps, more accurately, "There despite the grace of God go I".
