Every Saint Has the Spirit of a Crusader

By Saint Therese of Lisieux
Saint Therese
Countenance of a saint

To be Thy spouse, O my Jesus, to be a daughter of Carmel, and by my union with Thee to be the mother of souls, should not all this content me?

Yet other vocations make themselves felt, and I would wield the sword, I would be a Priest, an Apostle, a Martyr, a Doctor of the Church, I would fain accomplish the most heroic deeds -- the spirit of the Crusader burns within me, and I would gladly die on the battlefield in defense of the Church.

Saint Therese of Lisieux
Story of a Soul
, (New York: P.J. Kennedy & Sons, 1926), p. 201.

What struck me most was the serenity of her expression which surely came from a deep and abiding Faith and Trust in the Almighty Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Our "young" (11 yrs old) community has, as one of its charisms, taking part in the public forum in an effort to bring the Catholic viewpoint to the government and world today. We are truly fighters! We are avidly pro-life and I am on the administrative board of the Right to Life Organization; we have marched on Washington with the Tea Party. I spend much of my day writing/faxing/calling Congress. We are firebrands! Any women out there want to join us in this?????

DIOS LOS BENDIGA POR REFERIR DE ÈSTA SANTA ! , QUE PRIORIZÒ TRATAR DE HACER BIEN LAS PEQUEÑAS COSAS DE TODOS LOS DÌAS COMO DEMOSTRACIÒN DE SU AMOR A DIOS Y A LA SANTA MADRE IGLESIA. TODA VOCACIÒN DESPLEGADA DESDE EL AMOR...

Because of a talk just given to a Cahtolic Academy on St. Therese, I had to research for little known facts. Two books helped: St. Therese and the Roses by Helen Walker Homan and The Living Sisters of the Little Flower by Albert H. Dolan, O.Carm May St. Therese bless us with her prayers and love for all mankind.

Thanks for posting this. I was astonished that in my heart all these desires/vocations have been there for some time, not knowing that St Therese said this to Our Lord well before me!

Most beautiful little St. Therese! The heart of a warrior in the young, frail body so violently overcome by the ravages of tuberculosis! You dreamed of the priesthood, apostleship, martyrdom, death on a battlefield wielding a sword for Holy Mother Church! And what did Our Lord grant you? Sickness, months of suffering, coughing and coughing up blood till you were utterly exhausted, pain and foul-tasting medicines, and one more thing: you did become a Doctor of the Church! Could your sisters in religion ever have imagined it? Did you truly think it was possible when you wrote it? But Almighty God has the last laugh, so to speak. And now, dear little St. Therese, smile on us all still down here in this awful valley of tears. And maybe toss a rose or two our way! Pray for us!
