How Our Lady Granted Victory at Lepanto

By Jeremias Wells
Battle of Lepanto
The Battle of Lepanto, October 7, 1571.

In times of acute danger and hardship, we must always fly into the arms of the most powerful Mother of God and turn to the recitation of the Rosary. The Battle of Lepanto is a great lesson of confidence for us today.

When Saint Pius V ascended to Saint Peter’s throne, Christendom faced perils perhaps unequaled in its history of continual conflict, not the least of which came from the agitated and violent followers of Mohammed.

All the information and intelligence that Pope Pius V had been gathering indicated that the Ottoman juggernaut was about to roll across the Mediterranean and adjacent lands, spearheaded by the Turkish fleet, with Italy and Rome as one of its targets. No nation could stand up to the marauding infidels and the candidates for an alliance were few.

Northern Europe had risen up in armed rebellion against the Church with France deeply involved in the conflict, while much of Europe felt that neutrality was the best policy to follow after the Turks occupied a large chunk of its land in the Danube River Valley.

Only Spain and Venice had the resources to resist, and they hated each other along with deep mistrust. Yet Saint Pius — calling down divine grace as only a man of prayer could — forged an alliance with them as the core of an organized fleet of over 200 galleys. With his considerable tact and diplomatic skills, he not only kept them unified, but he convinced them to attack the enveloping menace.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Archbishop of Mexico had an exact copy of the Holy Image of Guadalupe sent to King Philip II, who in turn gave it to Andrea Doria, one of the three principal admirals of the fleet, who placed it in his cabin. When the Armada went from file to line abreast and attacked on the morning of October 7, 1571 the blue standard of Our Lady of Guadalupe was also flying from the masthead of Don Juan’s flagship. But Our Lady’s presence that day was more acutely felt through the Holy Rosary.

Our Lady of the Rosary

Pope Pius V, a Dominican prelate before his elevation, did what Catholics have always done in times of acute danger: fly into the arms of the most powerful Mother of God. As a follower of Saint Dominic, he knew the most effective means of imploring her help was through the recitation of the Holy Rosary. He ordered all monasteries and convents in Rome to increase their prayers for the impending battle and organized rosary processions in which he, as sick as he was, participated.

As the Christian fleet sailed toward the great clash of cultures, Mass was celebrated and the rosary recited daily on each vessel. This heartfelt request for divine assistance resulted in a crushing defeat of the Ottomans at Lepanto that ended their dominance in the Mediterranean.

To celebrate Our Lady’s intercession, the Church has designated October 7 as the Feast of the Holy Rosary and Saint Pius V added Help of Christians (Auxilium Christianorum) to the Litany of Our Lady (Loreto). Similar acknowledgement to the Blessed Virgin’s intercession through the rosary were made when John Sobieski forced the Turks to lift the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and after the victory of Prince Eugene of Savoy at Temesvar in his successful campaign to remove the Ottomans from Europe in the next century.

While the din of battle gradually diminished at the bloody waters off Lepanto, Saint Pius V was going over accounts in the papal apartments with Bartolo Busotti, his treasurer. Suddenly, he arose with his face radiant with joy and announced, “Let us go and thank God, for this moment our fleet has defeated the Turks.” Human agency brought news to Rome two weeks later.

Our Lady of Fatima
The message of Our Lady of Fatima is a call to conversion.  But will the world listen?

“Finally my Immaculate Heart will triumph!”

Some may object to the historical paradigm, not that it is inappropriate, but that it happened a long time ago. Yet, the Blessed Virgin made another historical visit to earth just ninety years ago, bringing roughly the same message to a larger distressed population. As Our Lady of the Rosary, she appeared six times at Fatima in Portugal to three related children, two of whom have been beatified.

In essence, she warned that God was terribly offended by the sins of mankind and unless that sinfulness subsided the world as a consequence would face horrible chastisements. Immediately following, we had a bloody conclusion to World War I, then six years of the most depraved slaughter of World War II and continual wars, atrocities and mutilations ever since instigated by two of the enemies of Western Civilization: Communism (as Our Lady predicted) and Islam. Sinfulness has not abated, but only increased, especially in the areas of family life, immoral fashions and lewd entertainment.

Our Lady will intervene once again in history, either to help her suffering children who have recourse to her or to bring down the wrath of God on those who refuse to pray, make sacrifices and stop offending Him. During the third apparition she announced the ultimate result, “Finally my Immaculate Heart will triumph!”

Thank you Robert and America Needs Fatima for continually encouraging us in the Battle. Our Lady will assist her children..-- but we must pray, fast, and work for good and change.. Dont let socialism take the US the way it has in Canada. Dont sit back on your catholicism == stand up for your Faith in and out of season.. Canada is under the wrath of complete secularism.. children are being'taught' that homosexual lifestyles are just the same as mummy and daddy== Evil is everwhere. as Our Lady has forewarned.. We pray the US stands tall.. you are our beacon..

God bless all of you, all of us on oct.15
May Canada follow suit and rise up an Army of Marian religious, men, women and children...
If we dont the day will come when we too will be martyred.. I truly believe I am right..

Not all people can be at a public place to pray the rosary. We are asking all our parishes in the Diocese of Baker, Oregon to pray at noon wherever they are. If they are unable to pray at noon sometime that day we have asked that they say a rosary to save America.

Today we honor our Lady of Victory, who asked her Son to change the wind and tide at Lepanto causing the defeat of the invaders. St.Pius V had asked that all would pray the rosary, they did and were blessed with victory over the enemy. A word to the wise should put a rosary in all our hands today.

This is my first time to get involve in a public square rally. But I accepted the invitation and said "Yes" to the Blessed Virgin Mary with love and humility. With that I am very confident she will protect me and all the people who are joining the rosary crusade from anything that is not of Jesus.

The Battle of Lepanto was fought and won after the Great Siege fought in Malta in 1565. The Siege was lifted and the much stronger Turks retreated on 8th September 1565.In another recent siege by the Italians and Germans, during WWII the italians surrendered on the 8th September 1943 this day being Our Lady's birthday. In Malta this day is a National Day popularly known as Our Lady Of Victories Day.During October all churches recite the Rosary daily.

Mary the Mother of Jesus, Son of God, is our great example and intercedes for us. Only God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit grant anything. There are three persons of the God-head. Read the the Church Creed. Do not lead people away from the one who sacrificed His life for us. Do you have the courage to post this.

Stefano, any Catholic who understands his faith knows that Christ is the Great High Priest and the One Mediator. But it was God the Father Himself Who chose to give us Jesus through Mary. Even the archangel Gabriel greeted her with "Hail, full of grace" and Jesus our Lord lived in her womb for nine months. The Holy Scriptures themselves give ample testimony to how we are to revere our Blessed Mother, who does indeed intercede for us. Be Catholic, be faithful, be formed and informed, be biblical. Honor thy Mother who is not Divine but not just another creature either, but is the Mother of our Savior and our Queen. And she has to be our Queen if her son is our King. All generations will call her blessed (another Scriptural reference). We are not taking anything away from Christ Who is the Author of His mother's being and our own. Peace be with you.

The inspiration from your articles are like showers on hot Summer, especially these days when the evil spirit is openly
working through the descendants of Ishmael, and threatening every code ordered by God, and being followed by man, encouraging freak violations to normal human practices. Immorality has reached a peak of excellence, where it is confusing man, as to what is RIGHT and what's WRONG. Everything, and anything becoming acceptable. Can man ignore moral issues with no inhibition to that of a creature? Let our Blessed Mother guide, and help us in these dreadful days to be morally right, inspire others to do so, and save us, and as many as possible from the thinking and morals of Islam.

By some unknown hand, I received a notice that I was to be a Rally Captain for the Public Square Rosary Crusade in Sylmar California. This was in 2008. I promptly accepted this task and I consider it an honor to serve our blessed Mother. This is our 4th year. It is a way of gratitude, looking back for Jesus' presence in my life today and forever.

I would like to suggest the we have other posters, in Spanish since we have a large Hispanic community in Sylmar. We have a weekly Rosary group that prays the Holy Rosary every Monday. We sing the Ave Maria de Fatima which goes like this..
El trece de mayo la Virgen Maria, Bajo de los Cielos a Cova da Iria etc. May we sing this during the rally?

Will pray the Rosary Oct 15, Civic Plaza, San Francisco, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Father Patrick Peyton's original Rosary Crusade.
This miraculous Victory was only made necessary by the abandonment by the Christian Princes of Europe of the Crusader defenders of the island fortress of Rhodes in 1522. The capture of the military shipyard on Rhodes turned the Caliphate overnight into the preeminent naval power of the Eastern Mediterranean.
While details of the sieges are different, if the contemporary bastion of Western Civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean, Israel, falls, the strategic implications will be far worse for the Global West. Israel is a preeminent center of intellectual innovation and is second only to the United States in military electronics design and technology. Iran will gain overnight avionic, air defense, and nuclear knowledge that Israel and the USA share.

On the anniversary of this day, our youth group got together. We ordered pizza, then processed around the school grounds with torches, praying the Rosary. Afterwards, we played Capture the Flag. We split into two teams: the Christians and the Muslims. The Christians won, of course :)
When we were finished, we had a bonfire to end the night. It was fantastic and really made us think about this wonderful feast day, more than we would have normally.
The Rosary really is a very powerful weapon against satan.

I was just wondering how many who have submitted comments about saying the rosary on Oct 7th or Oct 15th or at some rosary rally, say the rosary daily. If all of us who call ourselves Catholic, would say the rosary every day, there would be no trouble or wars or persecutions in the world.

We as Catholics have the greatest power in the world at our fingertips, and yet most of us refuse to use it on a daily basis. Shame on those who will not give Our Lady 15 minutes a day to cure the world.

If the governments, pagans and heretics of this world realized the power encapsulated in the rosary, I would guarantee, they would scramble to use it.

The comments of young Catholics are truly inspiring to older Catholics who seemingly become more cynical with age and begin doubting the sincerity of all save themselves. I have been guilty of this myself and so I say mea maxima culpa. My brother Dick in CA and my brother Steve in SD are daily communicants and pray the Rosary regularly. Starting now we will be on a joint mission--to pray the Rosary for peace in the world and for the spiritual health of our beloved Church. All things are possible when we pray to Christ through His mother.
