ALERT: Suicide lobbyist Katherine White Tudor teaches ethics at Catholic Seattle University

In a society that increasingly embraces the culture of death, Catholic educational institutions are not only cut out to teach the truth but bound to proclaim it loud and clear.  Sadly, however, many Catholic colleges fail to live up to their title.

The latest blow to the Catholic identity of Catholic education comes from the Jesuit Seattle University School of Law, where a professional assisted-suicide lobbyist teaches Law, Medicine, and Ethics at the End of Life.

Katherine White Tudor, adjunct professor of law at Seattle University School of Law, does more than just teach.  In fact, she works as a professional advocate for Compassion and Choices, formerly known as The Hemlock Society. The admitted mission of Compassion and Choices is to uphold the “right to seek aid in dying to avoid intolerable suffering.”

To give a platform to someone who openly opposes Church teaching flies in the face of Seattle University’s Catholic identity and duty.  In light of the recent United States Conference of Catholic Bishops document, To Live Each Day with Dignity, this failure on the part of the university is even more blatant.  The document states: “People who request death are vulnerable… To offer them lethal drugs is a victory not for freedom but for the worst form of neglect.”

Seattle University’s decision to employ a person who openly opposes and professionally undermines Catholic teaching is a disgrace that cannot go unanswered.  TFP Student Action invites its members to contact the university in peaceful protest.

"God giveth and God taketh away"... life. When we decide, the line at which life can be taken becomes murkier. Seemingly miraculous recoveries and cures change our often faulty human reasoning. Some things are best left to the Will of God.... all, ultimately.

Jesuit Seattle University School of Law should stand for what this school is molded, that of standing for our catholic church doctrine of truth. Stop Ms. Tudor in teching ethics in your school. This is a shame...

Suffering has redemptive value. When we suffer we seek as Jesus did to accept the will of God, trust in His love, and offer our suffering for the salvation of others. We can actually turn our suffering into prayer! Our suffering unites us to Jesus Christ and to his passion and death on the cross.

This Professor Katherine Tudor is working against Christ himself and the teachings of His church. Her compassion is misplaced. She should teach comforting the suffering as much as possible, but allow it and use it as God intended.

it would seem to me that the catholic teaching on life and death is know and believed in....how can this catholic school teach this concept....is it possible that she is teaching that this is not the way to die and making it known to the students....

I believe that hooking up a terminally ill patient or an accident victim to machines that will force that person to stay alive artificially, is even more so against God's will. For all practical purposes doctors and nurses interfere with the Lord's wishes every time they administer artificial means to keep a person alive. Forcing life upon a person after God had called that person to heaven, is very much against his wishes too.

You object to the employment of a person at your school because her beliefs differ from yours, but you do not object to your bishops' efforts to impose *your* beliefs on those who disagree with you. If you are secure in your beliefs, then this person cannot threaten you. If she threatens you, it might indicate that you have doubts about your own beliefs. Either way, it seems somewhat hypocritical to attempt to keep her off your faculty simply because of her personal views, while supporting the highly political attempt by the bishops to impose personal Catholic views on the rest of us. Or maybe these are two sides of the same coin--the need of religious believers to close their ears and minds to different ideas while trying to "protect" others from them too. Rather than imposing beliefs on others, I suggest that we respect each other and stop trying to block anyone from freely expressing and living as they believe. In other words, you take care of your soul and I'll take care of mine.

I commend the University for their support of such a compassionate woman. I hope that should I find myself in a position to need her, that I would be able to find someone like her to give me succor at the end of my days.

A college education, more than anything, is supposed to teach critical thinking skills. In any discussion it is imperative to know not only the arguments that support your beliefs, but be able to see the perspective of the other side as well. Is the purpose of this university to train students to make educated decisions or to indoctrinate and isolate them from any other views that challenge a particular ideology? There should be no harm in exposing college students to opposing views and teaching them to think critically of all information that they come across.

Thank you for keeping the tradition of Jesuit open-mindedness by keeping various viewpoints alive on campus with the best minds accessible to your thoughtful student body. Thank you Father Sundborg, ignore the vocal minority who fear their viewpoint will be examined by curious young minds.

Dear Sir or Madam
We can not tolerate Profesor who preach or teach as a Harrietic. We need to remove the Harretics and teach Church Doctrine and Belives. I do not understand The Jesuits Doctrine they use to be the great missionary of the world and Warriors for the truth of the Church. What happen to the founder of the Jusuit ST Franis Xavier. I use to think the Jusuits were soldier of the word God and Church Doctrine.

Reading the suppotive letters of those who praise CSU & heretic Ms. Tudor, I couldn't help but wonder how many liberal years of Catholic ed did they experience...Their support is just a reflection of how confused these so-called Catholics (in name only) are. They need prayers....

Unfortunately, I've stumbled upon this article too late to correct the major flaw in it that invalidates the whole premise. As a recent alum of SU, I can inform you that the Seattle University Law School is completely separate from the University. It is a separate entity, with a different board, different administration, etc. The law school was bought from the University of Puget Sound in 1993 and is only Catholic by association. Fr. Sundborg does not run the law school, Catholic priest and nuns do not teach classes at the Law School (as they do at Seattle University), and campus ministry and clergy do not actively serve/minister to Law students (although Law students are obviously welcome to participate in most campus religious events/services).
