Notre Dame Finally Drops Charges Against Pro-Lifers

TFP sent over 20,000 protest petitions
to Fr. John Jenkins at Notre Dame

On May 5, Indiana prosecutor Michael Dvorak dismissed the criminal trespass charges that he has pressed over the last two years against almost all of the “ND88,” the faithful pro-lifers arrested when they entered Notre Dame’s campus in peaceful and prayerful protest as the university bestowed honors on pro-abortion President Obama at the 2009 Commencement.

Dvorak dropped the charges as part of an agreement between the Thomas More Society and the University of Notre Dame.

“This is a big step forward and a victory for the pro-life cause,” said Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society and a 1965 Notre Dame graduate. “Those who share pro-life convictions may differ on tactics andapproaches, but they best serve their sacred cause when they work together to secure the common good for all human beings, born and unborn alike, rather than carrying on as courtroom antagonists.”

Tom Dixon, South Bend, Indiana attorney and Thomas More Society special counsel, had led the defense over the last two years, during which the parties engaged in vigorous litigation, including extensive discovery proceedings.

Since 2009, TFP Student Action members collected over 20,000 protest petitions, urging Fr. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame, to drop the charges.

“Hats off to the Thomas More Society and their team of lawyers.  They did a fine job defending the pro-lifers who were unjustly persecuted for nearly two years,” said TFP Student Action director John Ritchie.  “I think all the emails, phone calls, withheld donations, and prayers played an important role in the outcome as well.”

“We must pray that leadership at Notre Dame will consistently oppose the culture of death in all its facets – from abortion to homosexual ‘marriage’ – and resist ongoing pressure to recognize pro-homosexual student groups and activities which offend God,” said Ritchie.  “Catholic moral values are more important than football.”

I am overjoyed to hear that the charges were dropped. I was just speaking to my grandson this morning about this terrible shame. Thank you and God bless all those who prayed for those good people who were only praying for Christian respect for life of the preborn.

It's no wonder why conservative Christian groups can't see that the Catholic Church is the one true Church established by Christ because of the claptrap Notre Dame displayed at the Obama/abortion issue. And it took them two years to figure out what to drop the charges against Pro-lifers?

I am happy to hear the charges have been dropped ... but still deeply disappointed that Notre Dame took such a stand to begin with.

God bless!

I am SO glad to hear that justice finally prevailed in this situation! The charges were finally dropped against the peaceful, prayerful protesters who stood up against Notre Dame for their strong personal beliefs in the pro-life movement by not agreeing with ND's choice to honor the most anti-life president this country has ever had! Again, proof that the power of prayer works!

While this is happy news indeed, what were the terms of the agreement? Fr Jenkins' statement on Notre Dame University's web site makes no reference to it.

SHAME on ndu for having taken so long to come to their senses. It ought to be stripped of anything to do with the Catholic name since that is all that is left of it.

Thanks be to God now and forever! Thanks be to Our Blessed Mother for her intercession and for the faithful who both wrote letters of protest and prayed. I hope the ND88 were not locked up all that time. Peace and all good! JoAnn, sfo

I would think a better course of action would have been to bring charges against the Notre Dame official, Fr. John Jenkins, with the Holy See, to excommunicate him, and thereby disqualifying him from his job. Of course, being himself pig-headed, he wouldn't comply, but I'll bet the fur would really start to fly until something with the hierarchy at my father's old Alma Mater would get settled.

ND's reason for dropping the charges was only to avoid a lawsuit and possible fine. In the end, it was money and not compassion that forced them to change their position. As long as John Jenkins and his sycophants sit on the Board and spew their liberal ideologies, Notre Dame will be under a cloud. They need a lot of prayers to help them see the light.

Thank God we have a Victory for Pro-Life, the people who defend this cause and the Pro-Life Movement.

Abortion is not ever approved by God nor should it ever be approved by man.

This is only a small battle won. Fr. Jenkins is not the only anti-lifer; a pro-life faculty senate resolution just recently lost 22 to 8. This is the same faculty senate that resolved that ND "should not compromise its academic aspirations in its efforts to maintain its Catholic identity." Although there are some honorable pro-life faculty senate members, ND as a whole cannot and should not consider itself Catholic until it changes its ways.

St. Michael the Archangel, defeat that devil attempting to bring ND down!

Anyone planning to go to a "Catholic" University unfortunately needs to find out if they they are Orthodox in their teaching and not Heterodox which, it appears, Notre Dame supports.

Thanks be to God for this drop of charges against the pro-lifers. I am overjoyed hearing this good news. May God's name be praised forever and ever. Now,I believe we still have to pray for the conversion of these pro-abortion people, especially for all Catholic facilities to follow The Catholic Dogma and act accordingly. May The Mother of God forever stay by our side and guide our steps in every way. With The Holy Mother by our side, our march will be steady toward Victory.

Oh how happy our blessed mother must be to see the ND88 set free! They defended her honor, for this she is proud when Obama came and spoke out loud. They did not want to be outside, they were there to remember those who died. Even if those in power shall wander it is for the brave like the ND88 to protect what others would plunder. God's blessings abundantly fall upon those involved in this victory. Thank you!!

I live in South Bend and the television station associated with Notre Dame, WNDU, was very one-sided against those who found Obama's trip offensive at the graduation ceremony. So this is wonderful news! I know God will help those in this long struggle. I am very disappointment and ashamed of Fr. Jenkins, a man of the cloth, who refused for two years to stop this nonsense all the while hiding behind the prosecuting attorney. Shame on you Fr. Jenkins!!

Praise the Lord that all charges have been dropped. They should never have been issued in the first place. Shame on Fr. Jenkins, he ought to be removed from there and a real Catholic priest put in his place. One that remembers why he became a priest in the first place!

Well, as the Bible says, God is not mocked; one way or another, He gets His way. And given this heterodox University is named after Our Blessed Mother, I'm sure She is smiling for the honor given Her in this victory. With her, God is not outdone in generosity.

NOTRE DAME and JENKINS are caving in to secular pressure. No reason why a University could be both excellent in Academics and at the same time espouse the Catholic teachings. A CATHOLIC university with a priest as President going to court against PRO LIFE advocates - something is terribly wrong with the picture.

FR. JOHN JENKINS IS A DISGRACE TO OUR CATHOLIC FAITH. WE CATHOLICS ARE ABOUT LIFE FROM CONCEPTION TO NATURAL DEATH. ANY PRIEST WHO EMBRACE ABORTION OR ITS PROMOTERS WHO WOULD WASTE OUR LORD'S GREATEST GIFT, OUR INNOCENT UNBORN, MUST BE EXCOMMUNICATED IMMEDIATELY! NOTRE DAME DESPERATELY NEEDS A REAL CATHOLIC PRIEST AT ITS HELM.

GOD HELP US ALL!

So, do the "ND88" receive from Notre Shame University some hearty compensation, a formal apology, and perhaps even a belated vote of thanks, for their authentic and faithful Catholic witness in spite of the most incredible anti-Christian hatred demonstrated by this at-one-time Catholic and at-one-time credible university? I am waiting, Notre Shame.

To clarify, dropping the charges are indeed cause for thanksgiving, but also only the first of multiple actions necessary for the sake of mere basic justice here, let alone if Notre Shame actually is ready to redeem herself internationally as an authentic Catholic institution with any real credibility. I certainly look forward to other positive developments in relation to this once-great Catholic university, and her embrace of Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Until then, let us support worthy institutions of learning, such as those featured and positively reviewed by the hard working and faithful, Cardinal Newman Society!

My grandson has been accepted at Notre Dame for the coming school year. I have always a deep respect for this GREAT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY!!! BUT....I cannot understand why the President of SUCH a prestigious Catholic University would make a stand against Life...God's greatest gift to mankind!!! Where did he come from? Where did he get his Catholic upbringing? We must remember that all the knowledge in the world is nothing compared to living a life that is based on Truth...God's truth! I wish my grandson will learn values, Catholic values in that University that will make him a really, truly, child of God!!!

All Human life is sacred, from the moment of conception to the moment of our natural passing. No human desire or action should ever stop the natural creation of or end a human life! Surely the local Bishops or even the Holy Father can intervene when a Catholic institution like this seems to be supporting the ending of a human life that is not Gods will?

ND remains in my prayers. Their image has been fatally ruined for me. I can still hear the crowd's voice for President Obama's visitation shouting "Yes we can!" when Pro-Lifers pleaded "Don't kill our babies!" I don't think it will be salvageable in my lifetime. My hope lies when God's Blessed John Paul II generation some day rescues its mission of authentic Catholicism, bringing the truth, Who is Christ, to future generations.

True, the charges were dropped by the prosecutor; however, nothing is stated of whether Father Jenkins--the dean "priest" of ND campus--requested these scandalous charges be dismissed. That omission speaks volumes about ND's failed leadership and loss of the Faith. ND is just another "Catholic" campus that is Catholic in name only. I would not waste my money, nor my time, to attend such a secular dump.

You know, it's funny, but one of the things listed that "swayed" the university, probably the most, was that threats were made to withhold donations if the university persisted. As they say "money talks", even at a Catholic university. Sad, really sad.

Read about Fr. Theodore Hepsburgh and the Land O' Lakes Conference. There's a place named after him at ND. I think he's of that order of priests. That'll explain much. Basically, they through solid Catholic teaching to second place, behind a world-approved education

I was listening to Sirius Catholic Radio last evening to a talk show featuring one of the people who were of the "ND88". She said that the charges were dropped mainly because the ND88 were going to have civil charges brought against them and the University did not want that. I don't think Fr. Jenkins really wanted to drop the charges but was encouraged to do so. They all had to sign an agreement that stipulated many things-one of which had to be changed before Alan Keyes and this woman would sign it. It stated that they "believed"Obama stood for abortion" and that would not fly with them. It had to state that he "did" stand for abortion or something to that effect. All them are very relieved for this to be over.

Should there really be any other kind of priest? Catholicism is fundamentally pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-children!!!! Anything else just isn't Catholicism
