Caught on video: Vandals trash traditional marriage signs in Maine

By TFP Student Action
November 03, 2012

Is this what tolerance means?  You decide.

During a recent tour for traditional marriage in Maine, volunteers with The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) saw pro-marriage yard signs get unlawfully removed or destroyed by pro-homosexual advocates.

Some of the unsettling incidents occurred on Congress Street, downtown Portland, from October 29—31 and were caught on video.

The blue and yellow yard signs read:  “Don’t redefine marriage.  Vote NO on question one.  Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman.”

Same-sex “marriage” advocates ignored state law which protects such signs:  “A person who takes, defaces or disturbs a lawfully placed sign bearing political messages relating to a general election, primary election or referendum commits a civil violation for which a forfeiture of up to $250 may be adjudged.” (§1917-A. Unlawful removal of political signs)

“Free speech is just about dead in some parts of Portland,” said TFP Student Action Director John Ritchie.

“Every time our volunteers put up yard signs in favor of traditional marriage on Congress Street, pro-homosexual advocates damaged or destroyed them.  In less than five minutes, the signs were all vandalized. When new ones went up, those were trashed too,” he said.  “We found zero tolerance.  Zero fairness.  Zero free speech.”

However, TFP volunteers were very well received in other cities including Augusta, Auburn, Lewiston, Scarborough, Saco, Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach where they held rallies in defense of marriage between one man and one woman and distributed 10 Reasons Why Same-Sex "Marriage" Is Harmful fliers.

Laws exist to constrain evil. Is there any plan to prosecute? If not what is the point?

The point is to shake the good people out of their lethargy and convince them that we must be more dedicated to peacefully and legally defend God's marriage than our opponents are to destroy it.

Homosexuality is one of the predicted outcomes resulting from man's war against God. Romans 1: verse 16-32. Notice what other bad results have happened when cultures reject Biblical values. Mental illness, depression, suicide, domestic violence and increased drug use. All problems suffered more by people with same sex attraction. But, there is hope. As with any addiction, through great dedication, one can turn back to God and let Him help heal you. That's the Gospel (means "good news"). Tell a friend. Peace.

I hope you are giving this video to the police. There is a penalty for removing or destroying signs and those people are identifiable in this video, as well as the number of signs destroyed each. They should be fined, and held accountable.
Despicable people who want freedom to do whatever they want, but want to deny others the freedom to do what they want if it does not coincide with their interests.

Barbarian is as barbarian does. Civilisation has authentic marriage because civilisation depends on the exclusive and permanent unions of men and women: that's what marriage is, because it does what it does. Civilised people do not vandalise signs. Civilised people do not vandalise marriage.

Did you ever consider why these people trashed your signs? It's certainly not because they're "barbarians", but maybe because they feel passionately about this issue and think that it is ABSURD to not allow gays to marry. Their frustration manifested itself into the act of defacing your signs, which I don't support, but it's easy to see how that can happen. Who in their right mind thinks that gays shouldn't be allowed to marry?! How does it affect your life in any way shape or form? (don't answer that) Your anti-gay marriage campaign is based entirely on religious beliefs. It makes no logical sense to attempt to FORCE (through legislation) everybody to conform to your own Christian beliefs. Lets start talking about issues that actually matter, I can't believe that this is still a problem for you people. Please look at your religious beliefs objectively, you might not realize it, but some of them are quite prejudice, immoral and hateful. That's my 2 cents. Thank you.

It is the logic of not wanting my 7 year old son to grow up and be part of a society that has no respect for the creation of life in the way God intended, and everything that comes from that lifestyle that is not natural. This is why we say marriage should not be redefined! I find it completely logical! Marriage equals 1 man + 1 woman.

Your argument is false. Vandalism and destruction of property can never be excused in a civilized society just because someone feels passionate about an issue. Those thugs violated the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion and property rights by their barbaric actions. They should be arrested and charged with crimes.

Decent people don't vandalize other people's property period. It is absurd not to allow people other than a man and a woman to marry because that's not what marriage is. "Gay" marriage/rights DOES affect people in many ways, by indoctrinating people opposed to homosexual behavior and paying penalties, fines, and jail time when they don't conform to this. Actually better yet click on the link in the article above that says "10 Reasons Why Same-Sex "Marriage" Is Harmful fliers" which should answer your questions on that matter. You should look in the mirror and see who is forcing beliefs (through legislation and intimidation) on Christians and others who don't believe in redefining "gay" marriage and normalizing homosexual behavior. Marriage not only is a sacred institution, but it has been the building block for families and civilizations for centuries which has been protected by nation-states. It has a benign secular purpose as well and serves in the best interest of all.

It has been the law 1 man + 1 woman for thousands of yrs. and also no abortion, it is the pro-aborts, and the gays that want the laws to change to please them. The aborts got their way now the gays are trying to do the same. The governments should have stayed out and not forced the anti-God agenda in in the first place. This country was made a christian country by our fore fathers, if anyone doesn't like it they are free to leave at least its still that way right now.

Even if you are passionate about this issue, you don't go tear down signs because you disagree on it. The point here is FREE SPEECH! By doing so even divides our society more.

Anonymous, respectfully, I must point out deficiencies in your arguments. First, you ask to 'consider why these people trashed your signs', as though it somehow lessens their guilt. Being frustrated at something does not justify destroying the property of others. It clearly demonstrates no tolerance for others. To the question 'who in their right mind thinks gays shouldn't marry', the answer is the majority of Americans think that marriage is one man and one woman and they have won in almost every state in which it was voted on by the people. Re, 'it makes no logical sense to..FORCE everybody...', that comment is actually backwards. For the entirety of human history, people have understood marriage to be one man & one woman and it is pro-homosexual behavior supporters that are now trying to force this belief upon us. And it is not hateful because Christian morals, based on God's word, differ from worldly morals, based on today's 'enlightened' man who makes himself his own God. Peace2u

If you don't agree on an issue, that doesn't give you the right to tear down the signs against your beliefs. What has happened to FREE SPEECH? This creates more division. Let's keep peace in ourselves and in others!

The problem is that liberals don't believe in "Free Speech" unless someone is saying something they agree with. They also like it if you put down Yahweh(God). They are becoming truly vile animals completely absorbed by the "self". I've been reading my bible daily and am still trying to find where it says we're supposed to pray for these godless thugs....because it's hard not to just want to flog them. It's amazing to see the hate on most of their faces. I also think charges should be filed on each of these people if it can be done.

it is amazing that you would play the role of apologist for these criminals. Aren't people like them and obviously you always screaming about "live and let live"? How are they adhering to such "tolerance"? "Live and let live" applies to religious, conservative folks as well as it does for the pro-LGBT crowd. If you want to be tolerated and accepted, then you must first lead by example. It is my fondest hope that TFP takes this video to the police and has these criminals prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Do you see Christians terrorizing pro-homo people, doing anything aggressive toward them? Do Christians terrorize pro-homo parades, tearing up their signs/banners, etc.? There is still free speech in this country, but it is eroding quickly.

People resort to acts of aggression or vandalism because of perceived insecurity or a power imbalance, lack of respect, etc. This is just one example of the repercussions against supporters of traditional marriage. Others are more grievous. You can see their stories on the National Organization for Marriage, Anti-Defamation of Marriage websites. Why you don't want us to answer that? Are you not open to new information?

Nice 'Blow Off' of illegal behaviour regardless of the excuse made for them!
Your Quote: 'Who in their right mind thinks that gays shouldn't be allowed to marry?'
Answer: Those who stand in defence of children. Those who know that adults should not be allowed to forfeit the rights of children to suit themselves under ANY circumstance by stripping them of their basic fundamental rights to have their own mother or father which homosexuals cannot provide in any single case. Manufacturing a child does not make you a parent or equal to marriage which is: 'An exclusive union between ONE man and ONE woman entered into freely for life to the EXCLUSION of all others.' I don't get why that is so hard to understand. Sexual preferences and relationships based on sex never were a forefront for marriage. It has always been centered around children. Still is, to those of us defending it!

You need to read the TFP's outline and description of 10 reasons why SSM is harmful before you go on a rampage against Christian moral values that have more basis in sound reasoning outside of the environs of religious belief and overall testimony to objective truth than to dismiss the argument for marriage to remain a matter between one man and one woman.

That this video is a staged event is obvious. It's all shot within a couple of hours on a busy block of Congress Street in Portland, in front of an art college. How many times did the TFP crew plant new signs in that concrete planter, just waiting for the next person to take them?

And only an idiot would take the wickets too, especially with these plastic signs. Tell your friend with the sideburns, sunglasses and trench coat that he reminded me of Michael Palin.

Your sense of justice seems to me quite warped, Mr. Weinand. If you want to complain about a "staged event", please document the persons you believe to have been members of TFP--or friends of same--who would've inflicted a group of "false defamation". If you cannot demonstrate that TFP people trashed their own signs, you'd be guilty of defamation of character yourself.

I might point out that it makes no difference whether signs might be placed before a school of art OR in front of a church. While the ACLU and others will howl, the 1st Amendment still GUARANTEES the right of citizens to express their views on public property.

How sad that these different people would abuse their own rights in such a way.

Putting religion aside there are many reasons against homosexual behavior. Early death, sickness, abuse and children welfare. To only mention a few. Research it.

One might contend that prohibitions against the destruction of other people's property and acting out one's contempt for the opinions and convictions of other people is also based ultimately on some sort of religious foundation. We see in the video that there are those who are perfectly willing to violate ANYTHING that interferes with their own religion, the worship of the Almighty Self.

In the name of Tolerance, our schools were dictated to teach that we are nothing more than clever animals. A few decades later, a man sees something he disagrees with so he destroys it. Eclipsing the soul from its Creator proved to be a Bad Idea. We have to tolerate PEOPLE - We don't have to tolerate BAD IDEAS. Gay "marriage" is a Bad Idea. It erodes the family, the core building block of society. No moral foundation, no moral society. Thank you TFP for protecting Tradition, Family and Property. Keep shining the light of truth on a dark world that so desperately needs it.

Deconstructionism is the philosophy running ramped through our schools and universities. Nietzche, the first Deconstructionist said, "We (athiests) have not gotten rid of God until we have gotten rid of grammar." Grammar gives order to language which forms the objective truth given us by God and creation. To destroy God, he says, you have to destroy language. "Your ignorance is astounding" are 4 words giving the illusion of truth, but are completely subjective. On what authority do you claim these 4 words to be true?

I don't believe in the violation of anyone's first amendment right. If people want to put up supportive same sex "marriage" signs, I would not deface and otherwise illegally destroy them. I would stop anyone who tried to do so even though I don't believe in it. The men and women of our military are fighting and dying to give ALL of us this right.

Christians, as with any other group, are allowed to say and write what we believe. I will NOT back down and I will NOT be bullied into being silent. Being tolerant is a 2 way street. When Christians are bullied, physically attacked, and verbally abused no one screams intolerance or hate, no one stands up for them. But when ANY other group is offended everyone else is right there to help defend them. God help America. I'm praying for all. Fight on Christian Soldiers!!!

It reminds me of the frog and the scorpion story. A scorpion asks a frog for a ride across the river. The frog says no, you will sting me. The smooth talking scorpion assures the frog he has nothing to worry about. Just before reaching the other side the scorpion stings the frog. Shocked and dying the frog says, "why did you sting me". The scorpion answers, "I am a scorpion."

whew! I used to be on the "other " side. Being a "non-practicing" homosexual now and member of Courage group, through the Blessed Virgin Mary I have reconciled my Catholic faith with my sexuality, meaning, homosexuality is not in our doctrine, and counter to God's plan on reproduction. Immaculate Heart of Mary i put my trust in You.

Homosexuals are doing that because these words and signs could be unsettling for them or their partners, dampening their unbridled zeal for selfish perverted pleasure. These are very same words that they have snuffed off from their consciences not very long ago, have reappeared in the form of external signs and placards. These they must destroy, because things such as these only add to their pain and suffering, in their already dying spiritual persons.

Forgive me if this has already been addressed, but did TFP prosecute these amoral heathens? For their "tolerance" and "liberal" views, hold them accountable and make a statement of another kind: we uphold not only the moral conviction of one man/one woman is a marriage, we also uphold the moral conviction of obeying the Law (or paying the consequences for not doing so). It would be an excellent object lesson.
